Tennis Courts Recreational Area

Church Road, Broughton Moor

This Area was gifted to the Parish Council, to hold in Trust for the Village, by British Coal, when coal extraction work ended in the area in the early 1990s.

Under-used for decades, in recent years the Parish Council has installed some picnic tables and benches for public use and is looking to further develop the amenities on the site in future.

The grass is cut regularly during the growing season, under a contract with Tivoli.

The Parish Council has installed new gates, to prevent unauthorised access to the site.

You are welcome to walk your dog on the site but please clean up after your pet.  There is a waste bin on the roadside at the entrance to the site.

Horses are not permitted on site under any circumstances.

Update March 2026

A New Community Garden and Wildflower Meadow for Broughton Moor.

Plans are underway to transform the former tennis courts in Broughton Moor into St Columba’s Woodland

Garden, alongside the creation of an adjacent wildflower meadow.

Owned by Broughton Moor Parish Council, the project aims to breathe new life into an underused space by creating an attractive, welcoming area for residents of all ages to enjoy. The proposed garden will include raised planting beds, seating, herb planting in terracotta pots, composting bins, and a range of wildlife features such as a bug hotel, bird feeding station, and bird boxes. A new wooden perimeter fence will be installed to improve safety and enhance the appearance of the site.

Next to the garden, the wildflower meadow will introduce native plants to support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, with mown paths allowing people to explore and enjoy the area throughout the year.

The project builds on recent environmental work nearby, where around 200 native trees and hedgerow plants — including oak, birch, bird cherry, hawthorn, blackthorn, and dog rose — have already been planted. These trees help create wildlife corridors and connect the new garden to the wider landscape. Many were planted by village school children, helping to foster a sense of care and connection to the area.

The garden and meadow are intended to be a shared community space, supported by volunteers, and used for informal activities, quiet enjoyment, and occasional group visits. Further consultation will take place as plans progress.

This project represents an exciting opportunity to enhance biodiversity, wellbeing, and community pride.
